McMurry War Hawks Reyna Earns ASC West Player of the Week
After a banner week during which she led the McMurry University women's basketball team to a pair of American Southwest Conference wins, sophomore forward Skyler Reyna (San Antonio, Texas/Brackenridge H.S.) has been selected as the ASC West Division "Player of the Week," it was announced. Reyna averaged a sterling double-double of 16.5 points and 17.5 rebounds per game in the War Hawks' victories. It marks the second time this season that Reyna has won the ASC honor. She was also voted the ASC West weekly accolade on January 15. Reyna had a pair of double-doubles in the games last week - giving her 13 on the year - as she led McM to the wins, which assured the War Hawks of the program's first winning record since the 2011-12 season. In the team's last-second win over Howard Payne last Thursday, Reyna had 13 points and 16 rebounds. In the home finale versus Sul Ross State on Saturday, Reyna nearly had a 20-20 game, registering 20 points and 19 rebounds, despite not playing the bulk of the fourth quarter with McM well ahead. It was also the 5th time Reyna had 20+ points in a game in 2017-18 and the 20th time she tallied in double-digit scoring this year. On the year, Reyna is also averaging double figures in both scoring and rebounds to lead the War Hawks. Reyna scores an average of 15.7 points per game, while grabbing 10.3 boards per contest. She also leads the squad in shooting percentage (.475) and ranks second in total steals (47).

McMurry Scholar-Athlete Leadership Academy Reaches New Heights
Just over a year ago, McMurry University Director of Athletics Sam Ferguson launched a program he had long envisioned, targeting young scholar-athletes and designed to accelerate and enhance their leadership potential. With that, Ferguson instituted McMurry's Scholar-Athlete Leadership Academy (SALA) for the War Hawks' intercollegiate athletics department. The premise of the SALA is simple: identify freshmen or sophomore scholar-athletes who have those skills commonly identified in team leaders and help provide them a foundation before they are thrust into leadership roles on their respective teams. The SALA helps them become even stronger by the time they are upperclassmen via lectures and real-world experiences. Some of the key areas that the SALA focuses on are conflict resolution, valuing differences, leadership and character, and the power of positivity. The program's launch in 2016-17 consisted of participants selected by coaches and events consisting of speakers who came to campus. But it laid the groundwork for the future. Now, in just its second year, the SALA has ballooned to 30 of McM's best and brightest scholar-athletes. Each SALA member had to apply for acceptance into the program and will have the chance to be involved in several exciting opportunities to learn and grow in 2017-18.

The following scholar-athletes are members of the 2017-18 McMurry University War Hawk women's baskeball team. McMurry University's women's basketball team has been picked fifth in the American Southwest Conference West division in the 2017-18 pre-season poll of the league's coaches, sports information directors and selected media members. The War Hawks are coming off of a 9-15 (5-11 ASC) season and sport a current roster with nine returning players from last year's squad. Senior Sham Hunter and sophomore Skyler Reyna were both named to the ASC's pre-season "watch list," as well. Hunter is entering her third season as a War Hawks, earning ASC All-West division second team accolades last season. Hunter led McM in several categories, including: scoring (12.7 p.p.g.); rebounds (8.6 r.p.g.); steals (65); assists (77); blocks (6), and; free throw shooting (.771/74-96). She had a team-best six double-doubles in 2016-17. Reyna, in her first collegiate season, proved to be a gem among an impressive freshman class assembled by the McMurry Head Coach Brittany Densman-Roes last year. Reyna was tabbed on both the ASC West Division honorable mention list, as well as the ASC West All-Freshman Team. Reyna registered a total of five double-doubles this season, while averaging 11.9 points and 7.3 boards per game. She shot better than 39 percent from the floor and nearly 72 percent from the free throw stripe.
